Technology, executive functioning, and learning interventions
Dr. Carbone maintains an avid interest in the effects of technology on cognitive and academic skill development, social functioning and relationships. She provides education and consultation for clients and parents to promote healthy child and family "technology hygiene" and habits. Dr. Carbone provides education and strategy development to promote the positive influence of technology and to minimize detrimental effects secondary to its misuse.
In her practice, Dr. Carbone utilizes various technological tools with children, adolescents, and young adults. Proper use of technology tools can serve to assess various cognitive skills (i.e, attention, speed of processing), increase interest and compliance during the treatment process, and teach academic and learning skills to allow clients to complete tasks in a more efficient fashion. Technology tools and interventions are integrated into the assessment and treatment process for the following reasons:
- assess and monitor cognitive abilities;
- promote treatment compliance;
- develop strategies to promote academic success (attention, executive functioning, writing tools);
- assess and practice social skills;
- monitor and manage mood and anxiety symptoms; and
- learn self-regulation and "technology hygiene"/ good technology habits.
Executive functioning, learning and Technology groups
EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING AND TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS
Dr. Carbone leads small group sessions in which she utilizes basic computer programming and technology methods as a medium to teach children and pre-adolescents executive functioning skills (i.e., self-awareness and self-esteem) and social skills. Participants also learn and practice healthy and effective technology habits!
The primary purpose of this group is to teach executive functioning and learning skills NOT proficiency with coding; however, participants will be introduced to basic programming concepts and be able to complete fun projects! Participants engage in a small group setting (4-5 children).
Code Kids Workshops
Code Kids is designed for 3rd - 6th grade students who experience mild-to-moderate difficulties with self-regulation (i.e., inattention, distractibility, and impulsivity) and functional problem-solving skills related to attention disorders (i.e., ADHD). Participants will learn executive functioning and social skills. Participants will also be introduced to the basics about computer programming/coding skills and create fun and engaging projects. Contact Dr. Carbone to learn about eligibility for the workshops.
