Learning & Executive Functioning Groups
EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING AND LEARNING GROUPS
Dr. Carbone leads small group workshops which utilize various neuropsychological and educational methods to assist children and pre-adolescents to develop skills in the following areas:
Executive functioning (i.e., planning, sequencing, problem-solving);
Self-regulation skills (i.e., self-awareness, self-monitoring); and
Strategies to approach academic tasks and improve test-taking.
EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING AND SCIENCE LEARNING WORKSHOPS
Executive functioning and learning workshops are designed to provide upper elementary schools (2nd - 6th grade students) with an opportunity to develop fundamental learning and executive functioning skills through participation in science-based discussions and activities. The workshops are designed to foster curiosity and excitement about learning while simultaneously building competencies in the following 4 executive functioning skill areas:
Working Memory - the ability to hold information in mind and use it.
Inhibitory Control - the ability to master one's thoughts and impulses so as to resist temptations, distractions, and habit, and to pause and think before acting.
Cognitive Flexibility - the capacity to switch gears and adjust to changing demands, priorities, and perspectives.
Metacognition - the ability to think about one's own thinking (the processes used to plan, monitor, and assess on'e own understanding and performance.
Workshops are 60-75 minutes and are arranged such that participants can attend one session or attend several in order to obtain additional exposure and practice with the learning strategies. Workshop participants will learn about themes such as Exploring the Galaxies and the Adventures in the Galapagos Islands. Workshops are ongoing on a monthly basis.
